The Nursing Assistant course, NAS 100: Long-Term Care Nursing Assistant, is a one-semester, four (4) credit hour course that includes both classroom instruction and clinical training. It meets the seventy-five (75) hour training requirement mandated by the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) for long-term care nursing assistants.
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) provide essential patient care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. Typical duties include bathing, grooming, and feeding patients; obtaining and recording vital signs; assisting with mobility; and offering comfort measures. CNAs work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, mental health facilities, and private homes. Given the increasing demand for long-term care and the growing aging population, employment opportunities for CNAs are expected to remain strong.
Upon successful completion of NAS 100, students are eligible to sit for the Alabama Nurse Aide Certification Exam. Those who pass the exam will be listed on the Alabama Nurse Aide Registry, maintained by the Alabama Department of Public Health.
Employment information for Nursing can be located at the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
