The Track or Treat Chris Patterson Memorial 5k raises money to support The Chris Patterson Student Support Fund, which is designed to help Chattahoochee Valley Community College students facing financial hardships who need a special helping hand to complete their educations. The Chris Patterson Student Support Fund has assisted students in many diverse ways, including helping a single mother pay for day care, paying for transportation to campus or paying for books and supplies not covered by financial aid. The fund attempts to remove barriers that could cause an otherwise successful student to drop out.
Chris was a highly regarded student advisor at Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC). Unfortunately in 2009, he was a victim of H1N1 and passed at the early age of 32. He was a great friend and mentor to many students as he helped shape and direct each students future. He managed thousands of students and advisees who arrived at his door, which was always open. Most anyone who knew him called him a friend for the simple reason that Chris found joy in almost every aspect of life. He was kind, even-tempered, gracious, and always modest. Chris was always calm in the midst of crisis (even in the crazy days of registration), but most of all he was an extraordinary listener. After his death, many students e-mailed and commented on how he put them at ease when they were experiencing personal or academic complications and once he calmed them down, he was able to assist them in resolving their problems. Most students commented on how much better they felt after they had talked to Chris. We honor him with two things that he enjoyed in his short life: running and costume parties. Join us and help raise funds for students at CVCC who need to remove a financial barrier in order to continue their education. Chris always helped his students climb over the next barrier, let’s do the same in his memory.
The Christopher Clarke Patterson Award is given annually to a student who excels in community and college service, as well as in scholarship. The student is selected by a campus committee. The award honors the memory of Chris Patterson.
