MeadWestvaco invests $100,000 in Chattahoochee Valley Community College students

MeadWestvaco brought sunshine at the end of CVCC’s rainy week.  A large check for $100,000, signifying MeadWestvaco’s gift, was presented by the Contributions Committee to CVCC.

“Chattahoochee Valley Community College is grateful for MeadWestvaco’s generous gift and their commitment to higher education and workforce development,” said CVCC Interim President, Dr. Philip Cleveland.

“We are impressed with the innovative technologies that the College has implemented to engage the students.” said Roz Durden, Communications Manager MeadWestvaco. “We feel this is a great investment and we are confident of the value it will add for the community, as well as current and potential MeadWestvaco employees. Truly, CVCC is training a world-class workforce and we are proud to be a part.”

CVCC has plans to use part of the donation to fund its Workforce Development programs. At CVCC, Workforce Development offers workforce training for emerging workers, transitional workers and incumbent workers. Workforce Development also provides basic skills and job readiness training; short-term, non-credit training; continuing education; and customized training for business and industry.

During their visit, MeadWestvaco representatives received a special preview of the new Industry Training Center* on CVCC’s campus. “The Industry Training Center will provide state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that will benefit not only our students, but the community and businesses,” said Janet Ormond, Dean of Workforce Development.

MeadWestvaco representatives also received a special honor while on their visit. The stage, located in the new auditorium of the Instructional and Performing Arts Center**, has been named the MeadWestvaco Stage.

Dr. Cleveland commented, “We thought it most appropriate to name the stage, which will have 3D simulation and modeling capabilities, in honor of this great gesture from MeadWestvaco.”  He added, “We are honored that MeadWestvaco is invested in our students at CVCC and invested in improving the community.”

*5,000-square-foot Industry Training Center will support new (many grant-funded) programs being developed by Workforce Development.  The Center will house two large classrooms and open space for both didactic and experiential learning in Automotive Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Sustainable Construction, and Air Conditioning Technology.

**The 60,000-square-foot, three-story building will be home to CVCC’s divisions of Language; Business; Social Sciences; Business & Computer Science; and Health Sciences as well as a 400-seat auditorium. This building was the vision of numerous community focus groups held during CVCC’s Master Planning process, and has received widespread support from faculty and staff at CVCC, as well as the Alabama Community College System and private donors. CVCC will host a grand-opening event for the public this semester. Classes began in the new building on January 12.
