Chattahoochee Valley Community College ’s veteran math instructor, Evelyn Harris, knows that a little addition can make a difference in the life of a child.  That’s why she encourages students in her “Math for Elementary Teachers” class to add community service to their schedules.

Several of Harris’ students have taken heed and tutor students at the5th Street Boys and Girls Club in Phenix City.  The opportunity is mutually beneficial for the college students and for the youngsters receiving the extra attention.

“The best part is knowing that I can relate to them – seeing the expression on their faces, when the light bulb comes on.  It feels good to know that you are the one helping them grasp a concept,” says CVCC student Lori Bowers.

Along with the heartwarming feeling of helping a child, the tutors say it is good practice for them because they are preparing to be teachers.  “I learned to listen to the students.  A lot of patience is needed to work with the students.  Some students will try to get out of doing their homework, but being diligent and understanding allows the students to become comfortable with you.”

These findings are very familiar to an educator, like Evelyn Harris, with decades of teaching behind her and no current plans to stop.  She smiles as she watches her own students teach another generation, “I am really glad that they found the time to volunteer.”
