Chattahoochee Valley Community College was established in 1973 by Act No. 384 during a regular session of the Alabama State Legislature. Dr. Ralph M. Savage was appointed president of the new junior college at the September 26, 1973 State Board of Education meeting. The college was named Chattahoochee Valley State Junior College by the State Board of Education in October 1973. The College opened in temporary quarters in January 1974 with an enrollment of 289 students. In October 1974, Cason Callaway, Skeet Wilson, Johnny Wilson and Willie Wilson donated 103 acres for the College to build a permanent home. Construction began in 1975 and in 1976, the College had five new, permanent buildings and fifteen temporary buildings. The word “junior” was changed to “community” in the 1980s. Later, as a result of the October 24, 1996 State Board action, the word “state” was dropped, resulting in the official name of Chattahoochee Valley Community College. |
