Richard Mahone opens his fourteenth season as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Chattahoochee Valley Community College. Mahone graduated from Carver High School in Columbus, Georgia and attended Fort Valley State University (FVSU) in Fort Valley, Georgia. While playing basketball at FVSU, Mahone scored 47 points in a single game, earning the record of Most Points Scored In A Single Game. He earned a master’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Georgia Southwestern University, in Americus, Ga.

Mahone’s coaching career includes experience at both the high school and collegiate level. While at Carver High School, USA News Today ranked Mahone’s team in the Top Ten state polls, as well as number 22 in the country. At the collegiate level, the Birmingham Tip-Off Club honored Mahone with the Glen Clem Award, which is given to the top Alabama community college coach. He was recognized by his peers when he was voted Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Southern Division Coach of the Year six times. Mahone’s overall record at CVCC is 282 – 95. His overall career record is 701- 273.

Mahone’s accomplishments and dedication to excellence earned him the honor of being a member of the Nike Grassroots Basketball staff in Indianapolis, Indiana. Also, the Atlanta Tip-Off Club recognized Mahone with Georgia’s “Winningest Coach” award and inducted him into the Georgia Hoops Hall of Fame.

Mahone is a native of Columbus, Ga. He and his wife, Rita, currently live in Midland, Georgia.

Assistant Coach- Michael Woody

Michael Woody begins his first season with the Pirates as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. Woody is a graduate of Columbus State University (CSU), Alabama Southern Community College, and Five Points High School, Five Points, Alabama, earning degrees in Business Administration and Computer Technology.

Woody comes to CVCC after three seasons as the head coach for Vance-Granville Community College (NC) and one season as the assistant coach for Catawba Valley Community College (NC). In his first season at Vance-Granville, Woody earned the respect of his coaching peers and officiating crews leading and inspiring a team consisting of only five players. Woody successfully developed two to three players each season to graduate and/or continue as student-athletes, firsts for the program.

Woody is a Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) with 27 years in the United States Army Reserve, serving a combat tour in Iraq (2006) and a combat tour in Afghanistan (2012). LTC Woody is the Brigade Operations Officer (S3) for the 642D Regional Support Group in Decatur, Georgia, serving 2,200 soldiers in eight states.

Woody has served as a town councilperson for 18 years for Five Points, Alabama.

Woody is married to Michelle Woody, with a blended family of five children and seven grandchildren. Woody resides in Phenix City, Alabama.
